If your brand is associated with visually appealing photos, you can earn the trust of customers in better manner. This will trigger higher sales as >90% prospects decide whether to purchase or not by looking at images’ quality.

On your e-commerce portal and social networks, you need to post superlative quality pictures of right size for increasing engagement. Tempting photos enhance traffic and sales whereas poor quality photos drive away leads.

You can resize image with free or professional tools. This post will guide you on how to optimally use these tools for getting spectacular results.

Resizing Images in Photoshop

You can resize image in Adobe Photoshop without sacrificing the quality. Correct image size is important for printing or posting on web. In Photoshop, you can access different tools which make image size correction a breeze.

Changing The Canvas Size

You can simply resize an image in Photoshop by changing the canvas size. Only the boundaries would be reset while your image’s size would remain same. If you increase the canvas size, colored or transparent pixels would get added around the picture (layer locking will decide this). Your image will be cropped with removal of data from edges if you decrease the canvas size.

Navigate to ‘Canvas Size’ in ‘Image’ menu for getting the dialogue window. Here, you can put in the desired values for canvas’s height and width. You can avail of different measurement units. For digital purposes, pixels are recommended whereas inch/ cm is ideal for printing purpose.

Since the canvas anchor point is at image’s center, your canvas size gets uniform adjustment encompassing the complete image. You can, however, move the point for adding or removing pixels from any corner.

You can select the ‘Relative’ checkbox for adding or removing pixels in uniform number from present canvas size. You can carry out calculations within the number fields.

Using Trim & Reveal All

You can change canvas size without using the dialogue window with Trim and Reveal All functions.

You can remove background or transparent pixels of particular color from specified regions with Trim. If you have unlocked the layers, you can view the transparent option.

You can get the canvas resized for viewing the content which goes beyond image’s boundary with Reveal All.

You can access both the functions from menu bar under Image option. Use these as quick fixes only.

Alternately, you may get a new document created from ‘File -> New’ menu and specify the dimensions you want. Put your desired picture inside the canvas and keep adjusting until the result is perfect.

Adjusting The Size

Navigate to Menu bar for ‘Image -> Image Size’ to resize the image in Photoshop without affecting the image resolution. Resolution is represented as pixel density in PPI (Pixels per inch).

Your image would be sharper if the resolution is high. When you increase the image’s size, corresponding PPI will become lower. During image printing, PPI will determine the DPI (Dots per Inch) of ink.

If your picture size is 1inch X 1inch and resolution is 100 PPI, then it will become 10 PPI if you make the size 10inch X 10inch. The image will become pixelated and edges would be jagged. However, you can reduce image’s size without inviting resolution issues.

If you want to print the photo on A4 size paper, 300 DPI is recommended. Images to be used on billboard can be printed in lower DPI as they would be viewed from long distance and the pixilation would not be apparent.

Pixel density doesn’t matter in the case of digital photos. Irrespective of pixel density, a 400px X 400px picture will always have same pixel numbers.

In the ‘Image Size’ dialogue box, always turn off resample. This will ensure that pixel numbers would not change when resolution, width or height values are modified. When you put in resolution value in the number field, you will get the maximum height and width for which the resolution is applicable.

Resampling

Your aim is to enlarge the picture while keeping resolution intact. This is possible to an extent with resampling which causes image’s pixel dimensions to change through addition or deletion of pixels. Through interpolation, image’s actual pixels are analyzed for creation of new one based on tentative guess.

Pixelation Issue

From the ‘Image Size’ dialogue box’s bottom, ‘resample’ can be turned on. When modifying the height or width, image’s resolution would not be impacted. Missing pixels would be automatically filled in by Photoshop for keeping the resolution same when image’s size is enhanced.

If you turn ‘Constrain Proportions’ on, the height and width of the picture would be maintained at a constant ratio. This would prevent you from enlarging or diminishing the picture.

If you want to upscale, ensure that the proper resample method has been chosen from the dropdown menu at Image Size dialogue box’s bottom. The options are Bicubic Sharper (for reducing size) and Bicubic Smoother (for enlarging).

With Photoshop CC 2018, the new algorithm of ‘Preserve Details 2.0 Upscale’ was introduced. You can enable it from ‘Preferences > Technology Preview > Enable Preserve Details 2.0 Upscale’. Select this as the resample method from Image Size dialogue box.

Use resampling sparingly as this causes the photo to lose sharpness and clarity. The softness that is apparent after resampling can be made good to a certain extent. After completing resampling, have the layer duplicated for adding ‘High Pass’ filter. You can find it in ‘Filter > Other > High Pass’. For adding contrast and sharpness to your picture, use blending mode for turning the new layer into soft light. Alternately, you can use Unsharp Mask (Under Filter -> Sharpen) on the initial layer.

Cropping

Use Crop tool when you want the focus to be on specific part of the picture. The tool is available on toolbar and can also be activated by pressing C. This will make crop borders visible around the picture. Start dragging the edge along with corner handles to alienate the portion you want. You can hold down Shift key for ensuring that aspect ratio of your original image is maintained in the crop.

You may also specify the ratio in menu bar’s number field. You can rotate the cropped section for straightening the image if you click outside the frame. If you click and hold over the image, you can get new crop box drawn directly on the canvas. After cropping, press Enter for jumping on to normal edit mode. You may also double-click for same.

Resizing A Single Layer

You can also edit single layer without affecting the complete image quality. After selecting the desired layer, press CMD+T or navigate to Edit > Free Transform. You will get controls similar to crop box in the transform box. You can hold down CMD key for moving around individual corner points for distorting the image. Once done, press Enter to double-click.

You can resize layer creatively with Warp, Perspective and other options from Image > Transform. If you enlarge a single layer, pixilation issues will show up (not applicable for vector graphics). You can use mask tool for hiding areas and marquee tool for selecting and deleting image areas.
